Beyond Fair Trade

Matt Earley, co-owner of Just Coffee Cooperative, will focus on how consumers and industry can partner more profoundly with coffee farmers and their communities in order to help improve their access to basic necessities.

Over the past two decades “Fair Trade” and other certification schemes have focused on getting more money into the hands of coffee farmers. However, over the last decade it has become apparent that simply paying more for coffee is not enough to get sufficient needed resources into coffee farming communities. Matt Earley, co-owner of Just Coffee Cooperative, will focus on how consumers and industry can partner more profoundly with coffee farmers and their communities in order to help improve their access to basic necessities.

About the Speaker: Matt Earley is a Co-founder and Farmer Relations, Outreach, and Brand Architect at Just Coffee Co-op in Madison, WI. When not hanging out with farmers somewhere in the coffeelands, Matt likes hanging out with his family, playing music, running, cycling, climbing around, playing with power tools, and generally misbehaving. He is from Kentucky, prefers the term “y’all” to “you guys,” and is a bona fide Kentucky Colonel.
