Coffee Profiles: Uncommon Grounds

“It’s all Kismet. If you do it the world will gather around you.”

Uncommon Grounds is located just off the highway in Appleton, Wisconsin. Inside you’ll find Daniel Gould serving up fresh cups of coffee from beans ground on site.

Gould’s coffee journey started after college in California.

“After graduating from UW I moved out to San Francisco and worked for a food processing magazine for 10 years. It was in Mill Valley, California where I first discovered coffee roasting at the Mill Valley Roastery, now Equator Coffee. Ever since I first discovered fresh roasted coffee it has been my passion.”

In 1999, he joined the Specialty Coffee Association of America and attended his first SCAA convention.

“I wrote a business plan for a roastery in Sonoma, California, but life got in the way.”

Fast forward to 2001, Gould opened a cafe in Neenah and by 2004 had four Seattle Brew cafes in Neenah and Green Bay that he operated untiL 2006. In 2013, he found a used Roure K15 roaster for sale. He quickly purchased the manual roaster and moved it into his current location in Appleton. Uncommon Grounds was born.

In just a short 3-year span Uncommon grounds has managed to score retailers around the Appleton area like Festival Foods, Woodmans and Breadsmiths. For Gould, everything seemed to come together. “It’s all Kismet. If you do it the world will gather around you.”
